Healthy Eating Mindset - Quality vs Quantity

When thinking about what to eat when preparing a healthy meal, do you instinctually think about how many grams of protein, fibre, carbs, sugar etc and how many calories are in it? Or are you more guided by the general principles of selecting fresh foods, as close to their natural state as possible, without added preservatives (e.g. lean meats, fresh vegetables, fruit and nuts rather than packaged, processed foods ladden with preservatives and additives to enhance shelf life)?
