The Johns Hopkins University and Mayo Clinic devised a diet to treat epilepsy in the 1920s. The diet requires high fat consumption and a low intake of carbohydrates in order to induce ketosis. They studied how the diet worked with children who were unsuccessful in treating their epilepsy with medication, and they found that 55 percent of the original patients remained on the diet and 27 percent had a greater than 90 percent decrease in their seizures. There were some children who had no seizures for two years while on the diet, and they appeared to be cured of the epilepsy even after stopping their low-carb ketogenic diet.

Walter Lyons Bloom and Gordon Azar did a study in 1963 comparing carbohydrate restrictive diets to fasting diets. They concluded that eating a diet adequate in calories, protein and fat, but deficient in carbohydrate, resulted in weight loss similar to that of fasting patients.

The first truly popular low-carb diet was popularized in the book The Doctor's quick weight loss diet by Dr. Irwin Maxwell Stillman in 1967, and the low carbohydrate revolution began. The diet consisted primarily of protein sources like meat, fowl, fish and eggs while curtailing the consumption of carbohydrates to close to nothing. The book sold 2.5 million copies from 1967-69 and large numbers of people lost a lot of weight on this controlled carbohydrate diet.
 
Dr. Robert C. Atkins opened his practice as a cardiologist in New York City in 1960. When he was in his 30s and overweight, he ran across a 1963 article by Bloom and Azar. Their article said you do not have to go hungry to lose weight; instead, you can lose weight by cutting back on carbohydrates. This convinced Dr. Atkins to try the diet, and to his amazement it worked very well. After his success with the diet, he began recommending it to his patients and found that not only did they lose weight; other health problems they were fighting with either had greatly improved symptoms or went away completely. These included high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, heartburn, diabetes, acid reflux, and arthritis. The vast majority of his patients also reported that they slept better, had more energy, got sick less often, and basically felt better overall.

Dr. Atkins published his original book, Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution, in 1972; however, the revolution was off to a slow start. His low carbohydrate diet countervailed what had been taught in the mainstream medical institutions and was attacked by the likes of nutritionists, dieticians, physicians, and the Journal of the American Medical Association; however, other doctors were also now aware of the connection between carbohydrates, disease and obesity.

In 1983 Dr. Richard Bernstein, a type 1 diabetic since the age of nine, opened his highly controversial clinic to treat diabetics with a very strict low carbohydrate approach to the disease. Bernstein's ideas were ridiculed at first by the medical establishment, but the low-carb revolution picked up steam.

One low-carb diet; however, was much more successful and popular with the public than the others; that was Dr. Robert Atkins' diet. Literally millions of people succeeded in losing weight and improving their overall health by following the programs put forth in Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution.

Dr. Atkins nutritional approach spread primarily by word of mouth as people successful on the diet introduced it to others. The medical establishment was stubbornly against the Atkins approach and tried their best to discredit it. The debate over the Atkins nutritional plan grew into a roar as millions tried and succeeded losing weight and improving their health while the experts claimed it was wrong and could not be done. Can Food Stamp Users Be Stopped From Buying Soda?

In the tough battle to fight against obesity, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture to ban the 1.7 million users to use food stamps to buy soda, or other soft drinks.

This initiative is part of a series of interventions to fight against obesity, which included advertising, stricter rules on food sold in schools, and an attempt to tax sugary drinks.

Whilst it may be surrounded by political and ethical debate, it's not a bad idea really, is it? In fact, wouldn't it be great if food stamps were used to buy vegetables, fruits, meat, eggs, dairy products, nuts, seeds and canned products - healthy foods?

For a healthier nation, this thing should be signed, sealed and delivered as of today, but in the "humor us" department, let's take a look at some of the thorny issues that may arise such stipulation.

Ethically, is it fair to discriminate against those who have food stamps? Who are we to tell them what they can and can not buy?

Conversely, we all have a collective responsibility to ensure that already off-the-track health care spending does not go even further into the abyss.

The thread of the "big-brother" argument here is "How dare they tell people what they can and can not eat or drink," but let's not forget that the regulation of what people can get their government assistance on is not the same as telling people what they can and can not eat or drink.

Like many other ideas, the problems are deeply rooted, and the solution is multifaceted. Although this is a good idea, there are bigger fish to fry - specifically corn subsidies that keep prices artificially low.

Ultimately I do not see this passage because of the industry-cozy relationship between regulators and major food government food. I'm sure they have soda lobbyists working overtime to ensure that this idea never sees the light of day. In addition, in 2004, the Agriculture Department has rejected a request by Minnesota to prevent recipients of food stamps to buy junk food.

What Are Your Family Food Staples?

Ever wonder what the staple foods are in another person's diet?


Here in the UK we have Gillian McKeith's TV show, "You Are What You Eat", and while I certainly don't agree with many of Gillian's concepts, I love how she delves into the eating habits of those families, laying it out for the whole nation to see.


It certainly makes interesting viewing, if nothing else.


In less dramatic fashion, Walletpop recently asked dietitians and nutritionists what food stocked their pantries and refrigerators.


Here are some of their choices:

Oatmeal, fruits and vegetables, beans, avocado, wild salmon, nuts, eggs, cottage cheese, grass-fed beef, hummus

Nothing very strange or startling there perhaps, but interesting nonetheless.


Some of my weekly food staples include oatmeal, natural yogurt, lentils, spinach and coffee (oh, and a little chocolate!).

What Good Foods Can Do For You (Study)

This may seem rudimentary to the point of absurdity, but good food does good things to the body.
 
A study led by Lund University professor (of food-related nutrition) Inger Björck has addressed the health effects of a diet made up of multiple foods that are thought to reduce inflammation. The study details are as follows;

Forty-four healthy, overweight people between the ages of 50 and 75 took part in the diet study. Over a four week period they ate foods which are supposed to reduce low-grade inflammation in the body, a condition which in turn leads to metabolic syndrome and thus obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The test diet was rich in antioxidants, low-GI foods (ie, slow-release carbohydrates), omega fatty acids, whole grains, probiotics and dietary fibre. Foods eaten include fatty fish, barley, blueberries , almonds, soy protein, cinnamon, and vinegar and a particular type of whole bread. LDL cholesterol, blood lipids and blood pressure were  reduced by 33 percent, 14 percent, and 8 percent respectively. A risk marker for blood clots was decreased by 26 percent; and a marker of inflammation was also greatly reduced, while memory and cognitive functions were improved. 


Results of the study make sense as they are healthy, mostly unprocessed foods which have been shown to have health benefits individually. It would however be rash to assume that this group of foods is the best way to eat - any diet change is usually a large improvement in the average diet habits. Other diets could be equally (or at least competitive) as effective as the pattern they chose - as long as calorie consumption was restricted. A control group would be justified for this study to give a little more credibility. It would be interesting to to see what kind of weight loss participants experienced.

Mothers Underestimate Influence On Their Kids' Weight

A survey of 1,037 women has uncovered a knowledge gap when it comes to certain weight issues - including their influence on their children's weight.

Here are some of the findings of the survey - conducted by HealthyWomen.

Not surprisingly, most respondents know that obesity leads to an increased risk for health problems, such as high blood pressure (93%), type 2 diabetes (89%), and heart disease (88%).Less than one-third of the women, however, know that obesity is associated with increased risk of colon cancer (26%), gallstones (30%), and breast cancer (23%).While 87% of women believe a parent's obesity affects a child's risk of becoming obese, only 28% assign that responsibility to themselves.Only 11% of respondents know that a child's risk of becoming obese more than doubles if the mother is obese during her first trimester of pregnancy.

Education is central to change, but knowledge is only power if you choose to use it. To be sure, prevention of childhood obesity and healthy children begins at home - with BOTH parents (if there are 2 parents involved).

It goes without saying that mom and dad need to change their ways to become the healthy role-models for children.

While growing healthy habits in children starts at home, it would be folly to put 100% of the responsibility on parents. I firmly believe in the idea that it takes a village to raise a child, and in this case to raise a healthy, active child. The culture and environment children are exposed to nowadays may be one that sets them up for failure. Change needs to take place in communities, schools and various levels of government, especially for higher risk children.

Battaglino Cahill sums it up nicely when she says;

Empowering and educating women is the best way we know to break the cycle of obesity and promote healthy habits for the life of any woman and her loved ones.

Weight Loss Goal Setting

Earlier in the week I was doing some research browsing health and weight loss forums.


In reports from people who have achieved great results, a recurring theme was goal setting. I personally love self-development and have done many courses in this field, so have often covered goal setting tips and strategies, but I am also aware that for many people it is something new, and having to educate yourself on goal-setting techniques, whilst trying to learn and apply healthy weight loss strategies can be overwhelming. Which is why I wanted to just keep this brief and repeat the recommendation of one lady from the forum who has herself lost 20lbs, and her husband 43lbs - in the beginning keep it simple.


Think about the some of following and set goals each week, but keep it simple as too many goals may confuse and overwhelm you. Consider how you may improve your diet; what is your exercise plan; what amount of weight would you like to lose? Having something to aim towards gives you direction, and a way to monitor your progress and make necessary adjustments. If you don't achieve every goal you set, don't be dis-heartened or overly critical; just always be honest with yourself about what you did or didn't do each week and keep making necessary adjustments (this may mean adjusting your diet or exercise or it may mean altering your goals if they were unrealistic).
